US may move troops from Europe to contain China's threat in Asia

The US is likely to intensify its military activity in Asia to curb Chinese aggression.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday that they were reviewing the deployment of troops around the world in view of the growing threat perception from China to Asian countries such as India, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines in such a way that, if necessary, the US could counter the domination of the People's Liberation Army.

The US is going to deploy some of its forces from Europe in Asia as part of an important strategic decision to curb China's growing influence in Asia.

Pompeo said that in the light of China's growing threat to India and other Southeast Asian countries, the US would move its troops in Europe for deployment "in the right places".

On the withdrawal of the US forces from Europe, Pompeo said that it was part of their military strategy. He added that China was a potential threat to South China Sea as well as to India, Vietnam and other countries, hence the US would "properly deploy" its Army in Asia.

While attending the Brussels Forum 2020, Pompeo said that the US would ensure that the fresh deployment is able to compete with the PLA. He said: "We feel that it is a challenge of our times and we will do our best to keep all the resources available to deal with it." Pompeo added: "The PLA has scaled up the border dispute with India, which is the largest democracy in the world. China is also militarising the South China Sea and illegally occupying the territory, thereby threatening important sea routes."

The US statement comes at a time when China and India are engaged in violent clashes in Galwan Valley. Pompeo had last week criticised the Chinese military for increasing tensions with India and for militarising the South China Sea. He also called the Chinese Communist Party "irresponsible".

Significantly, many Asian countries such as South Korea, Japan and the Philippines have a US military base.
