Bhubaneswar: In a great humanitarian gesture which also exposed the faultlines in Odisha's administration apparatus, the body of a retired headmaster was left unattended in Shergarh village of Ganjam district.

Pitambar Padhi succumbed on Thursday after suffering from fever and cough for about a fortnight. His two sons live abroad and the neighbours didn't dare come in contact with the body fearing that it might be infected with the Corona virus. The unfortunate incident also exposed the apathy of the State's administration.

Bhubaneswar: The Covid-19 tally in Odisha registered its highest number in a single day on Thursday when it touched 21,099 with 114 deaths reported. Ganjam district had the largest share with 540 cases.

Odisha recorded 1,264 new positive cases within 24 hours. The I&PR Department said that 847 of the cases were reported from quarantine centres and 417 from local contacts. The latter includes 61 identified cases from a local flour mill of Mancheswar Industrial Estate, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation stated.


Odisha's oldest man beats Covid-19 at 95

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has in a tweet congratulated Udayanath Bisoi of Chakunda village in Sorada block of Ganjam district who, at the age of 95, survived the fight against Coronavirus.

He is the state's oldest man to recover from Covid. Bisoi was undergoing treatment at Tata Medical Covid Hospital of Sitalapali in Ganjam. He has set an example for other patients in the state who are fighting the virus.
