Veteran Odia actor Bijay Mohanty passes away

Bhubaneswar: Veteran Odia actor Bijay Mohanty died on Monday night following prolonged illness in Bhubaneswar. He was 70 and suffering from an heart ailment for which he was undergoing treatment in Hyderabad. He was brought back to Bhubaneswar only last month in a special ambulance.

Mohanty was well known for his natural performance in the Odia cine industry and had acted in more than 180 films. He occupies a special place in the hearts of millions of fans across the state and outside. 

Born in 1950, he started his career during school and later graduated from the National School of Drama. After his debut in 1977, he worked in more than 180 movies. In his foray as a politician, he joined the National Congress and contested the Lok Sabha seat from Bhubaneswar.

After his demise, condolences started pouring in from political parties and the industry fraternity. The notables include Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi.

In an unrelated development, the 1976-batch senior IAS officer (retired) Priyabrata Patnaik paased away on Tuesday at a private hospital in Mumbai. He was 67 and was suffering from cancer. He had served the State in various capacities, including as the CMD, Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation in the rank of chief secretary. BJP national vice-president Baijayant Jay Panda tweeted about the demise of Patnaik and offered his condolences.
