Monsoon Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the monsoon will likely reach northwest India and encompass most of the region between June 27 and July 3.

IMD has also stated that the conditions are favorable for the southwest monsoon to progress into additional areas of north Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and eastern Uttar Pradesh within the next 3-4 days.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated in its prediction that, “With favorable monsoon conditions, most parts of the country are likely to experience above-normal rainfall, except for the western Himalayan region and west Rajasthan, where it is expected to be below normal. The southwest monsoon is expected to progress into the remaining parts of central India and northwest India during the week.”

As per the meteorological department, the current prevailing conditions are ENSO neutral, which signifies the transition phase between the warm El Niño and cold La Niña phases of ENSO.

It is anticipated that La Niña conditions will emerge around August.

The June forecast from IMD stated that current conditions in the equatorial Pacific show neutrality in the El Niño Southern Oscillation. Sea surface temperatures in the western and central equatorial Pacific Ocean are higher than average, while they are lower than average in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. According to the latest Monsoon Mission Coupled Forecast System (MMCFS) forecast, ENSO-neutral conditions will likely persist, and there is a strong possibility of a transition to La Niña conditions around the August-October 2024 season.

The monsoon made progress on Thursday in parts of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, northwest Bay of Bengal, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Bihar.

Some areas in Delhi-NCR and nearby regions experienced light to moderate-intensity rainfall and winds on Thursday, providing a welcome respite from the intense heat.

Friday saw significant rainfall in several parts of Delhi, with the city recording 4 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period leading up to 8.30 am on Saturday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had previously announced that the monsoon is anticipated to reach Delhi-NCR by approximately June 30th.

On Saturday, the meteorological department issued a red alert for heavy rains in Malappuram district and an orange alert for seven districts in Kerala.

Red alerts for heavy rains were also issued in Karnataka and Goa.
