Govt refers ‘Wakf Amendment Bill 2024’ to JPC for comprehensive scrutiny

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju proposed sending the Wakf (Amendment) Bill 2024 to a Joint Parliamentary Committee.

Wakf Amendment Bill 2024: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju proposed sending the Wakf (Amendment) Bill 2024 to a Joint Parliamentary Committee. “Constitute a Joint Parliamentary Committee and send the Bill to it for comprehensive scrutiny. Have a comprehensive discussion on the Bill, call more stakeholders, hear their views,” he said in Parliament on Thursday.

Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said, “They (the opposition) are misleading Muslims… till last night Muslim delegations came to me… many MPs have told me that the mafia has taken over the Wakf boards.”

“It is not right to associate MPs with any religion. The MP should be a member of the Wakf Board. If the MP is a Hindu or Christian, what can we do? Should we change the religion of the MP?”

“The Bill has now been named as – ‘The Integrated Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995’ ‘Ummeed’,” Rijiju told Parliament.
