From his Pakistani prison cell, Imran Khan will run for chancellor of Oxford University. Despite serving a 10-year prison sentence, the former prime minister of Pakistan and famous cricket player will cast an online vote, according to The Telegraph in the UK.
Geo News was informed by Imran Khan’s adviser on foreign issues, Sayed Zulfi Bukhari, that the imprisoned former prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, intends to seek for the position of Oxford University Chancellor.
The Chancellor’s position became open on Thursday, according to Bukhari, who told the Pakistan-based media site that Lord Patten, who was 80 years old, had left after 21 years of service.
Despite being incarcerated in Adiala Jail for multiple instances of corruption and inciting unrest during the previous year’s elections, Khan, an Oxford alumnus, intends to seek the position.
Imran Khan is running against former UK prime ministers Tony Blair and Boris Johnson for the position of Chancellor of Oxford University.
In 1972, Khan was a student at Keble College in Oxford, studying politics and economics. In addition, he led the university’s cricket team as captain. According to Geo News, he made his Test cricket debut for Pakistan in 1971 and was Bradford University’s chancellor from 2005 to 2014.
There is public clamor for Imran Khan’s candidacy, Bukhari said Geo News.
“We will announce it publicly once we get a go-ahead from Khan and start the signature campaign for it. He’s the most suited person right now for this post and we hope he will win the contest. We await approval from Khan and the campaign will begin,” Geo News reported, quoting Imran Khan’s international advisor.
The Oxford University Chancellor is a ceremonial leader who oversees significant occasions. Online applications were requested by the university.
According to the Oxford University website, Convocation, which consists of all former students who have been admitted to the University and have been granted a degree (other than an honorary degree), members of the Congregation, and retired staff who were members of the Congregation at the time of their retirement, elects the Chancellor.
